LEAH BENETTI
Hello! My name is Leah Benetti
I am a multidisciplinary artist working mainly in sgraffito, ceramic, watercolours, drawing, printmaking, and poetry. I received my BFA in Cross-Disciplinary Arts: Publications/Printmaking from OCAD University in 2020 and studied in the Studio Arts program at York University prior to that.
I grew up in Nova Scotia by the Bay of Fundy. I was always drawing and painting as a child and when I was 12 my mother Danielle Sawada opened her pottery business Thrown Together Pottery. I learned from her practice and found my second home in her studio. For several years I busked spontaneous poems on city street corners with my 1950s typewriter. This adventure took me to Montreal, New Orleans and Toronto.
I have been teaching art classes to youth in high school and running small workshops since moving back to Nova Scotia.
I am inspired by the natural world around me and the landscapes of emotions. I have used art to explore grief, hope, and memory after I have lost people very close to me. I am interested in figures, nature’s creatures, garden magic, and everyday moments.
